The following is an update of the current status of the NSC-funded development of a Sustainability Standard for dimensional Stone. This update includes a brief overview of the current status of the standard, along with a projected schedule of events.
Standard Development Status
After a brief delay in the development process while the stone industry debated internally the extent and purpose of its involvement in the standard setting process, standard development activities are back on track. In January, Ecoform and NSF picked up where things left off by beginning the process of converting the concepts previously developed by stakeholders into draft language for use in the standard, a precursor to the development of a draft standard. This work is on-going.
Also in January, Jack Geibig (Ecoform) and Mindy Costello (NSF) gave a 3-hour briefing to the NSC Board at StonExpo in Las Vegas on the current status of the project, and answered a series of questions forwarded by the Board. An in-person meeting of the Joint Committee was also held in Las Vegas (4-hours), the focus of which was to reorient the Joint Committee to the current status of the project, and to establish a working plan for going forward. A good part of this meeting was spent answering questions about the process and reviewing the status of various aspects of the standard. The meeting concluded with the formation of stakeholder sub-groups formed around key topics that have not yet been adequately addressed in the standard.
